Black Strap Molasses Benefits

Back Strap Molasses was one of the most used sweeteners for centuries.  Today, thanks to its health benefits, it is most known as a “health food.”  And when you do a bit of research, it’s easy to see why.

According to whfoods.com, “Blackstrap molasses is a sweetener that is actually good for you. Unlike refined white sugar and corn syrup, which are stripped of virtually all nutrients except simple carbohydrates, or artificial sweeteners like saccharine or aspartame, which not only provide no useful nutrients but have been shown to cause health problems in sensitive individuals, blackstrap molasses is a healthful sweetener that contains significant amounts of a variety of minerals that promote your health.”  These include: iron, calcium,  copper, manganese (an enzyme activator), potassium and magnesium.  In addition, Black Strap Molasses contains “a full array of nutrients, including carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and more”.

The “trick” to molasses is finding ways to work it into your baking.  It is quite sticky, so it’s not useful in all occasions.  However, there are many, many ways you can work it into your diet.  One easy way is to add it to smoothies or baked beans in place of honey or brown sugar.  There are also some great cookie recipes where molasses is used for both its flavor and sweetening properties.  And the more you look for it, or recipes that contain it, the more you will find ways to incorporate it into your diet.

So, take heart oh possessors of a sweet tooth, there are “healthy sweeteners” out there!  And Black Strap Molasses is at the top of the list.  It’s one more way to start enriching your foods without breaking your bank (or doing away with your sweet tooth).
