Good post. I have dealt with the opposite problem. All of my kids have been small. DHS investigated Kimmie because she was below the growth charts for her age...Tristan's pediatrician told us to spoon feed him butter, and just last week Gavin's doctor told us to push more food on him, even though at 14 months he is eating as much food as his older siblings. He has soft baby fat, chubby cheeks, and legs. It scares me that these doctors are even in on pushing for everyone to be "average" when average for this country is over weight...even for kids.
I've never withheld food from my kids, but I don't load them up with a bunch of crap. They don't drink pop and rarely juice. They eat until they are full, lord knows, they have plenty of energy, and ultimately, they have all been relatively healthy. They have my genes...so I know they will be skinny and probably short...and sometime in their mid 20's their metabolism is goign to slow down like mine did, and I just hope by that time I have taught them to make good choices about food and exercise so that they don't have teh weigth struggles I've had.

I usually stumble on them. Trader Joes used to have some. AND there is a gluten free area in Fred Meyer that has some as well. Although, you are right, really hard to find in general. But, not terribly expensive as the GF world goes. I will ask my sister-in-law... she's GF, dairy free, sugar-free. So, she has a lot of info for me when I need it. :)

Actually that has been my cooking premise for several years now. When I decided to get healthy, I had trouble sticking to counting calories, or completly cutting out certain foods like chocolate, bread, ice cream! But I do try to eat everythign in it's purest form, meaning I don't but very much that comes in a box or premade except my lunches. But that's a whole other issue. I've also tried to recreate the food we enjoy most when we are out at home. For example, my crowing achievement thus far has been herb rubbed rack of lamb! Exquisite! Better than any lamb we have ever had in a restraunt, and it's rubbed with entirely fresh herbs so I know what's going into it. And I've started making really good Chicken Fried Rice at home too. I still sigh heavily as I watch the piles of veggies grown on the side of the plates though.

Very thought provoking! I'll have to say, there isn't a lot in my life other than my family that I couldn't walk away from. That is one of the few ebenfits of havign been through a divorce. When your entire world rips apart in an instant, you learn what's truely valuable and what isn't.
I guess technology would be my sticking point. I could leave my laptop, cellphone, or Kindle...but I don't think I could leave all three! So much of my social life is online!

@Janine... good point. When it comes to "better food" or shoes for your kids, that's a tough call. It took me years to figure out how to stick to a tight budget AND eat real food. I actually spend less on good, wholesome food than the quick and easy junk food of yester years. But the transition is a tough sell if you were to go all fruits and veggies. Maybe start with wholesome "comfort foods" first - like homemade mac and cheese instead of boxed. Or roasted root veggies with butter instead of salad (the roasted veggies are usually a bit sweeter). You're setting a great example. It takes time but soon your kids won't even blink at a plate with veggies on it AND they may even have requests (my oldest prefers broccoli and orange or red peppers... I NEVER would have requested those as a kid!) @Sara - little to no money is where we've lived for years and years. Funny... blogging and art don't seem to pay much. :) BUT, you, too, are a huge, HUGE example for your kids. You choose the "real ingredient" foods over the quick and non-food ones. That is a bit perk. Keep it up mamas! I pray for blessings and inventive ways to stretch dollars and recipes that are both healthy AND loved by your families to come your way!

SO TRUE.
It feels like a luxury to spend money on a "health class", even if we know it, along with personal coaching and a supportive group dynamic could and would be life-changing. I suffer from this as well. There isn't much "extra" money, and what there is isn't spent on my personal health and wellness.
Great post.

I want expand my answer from Facebook. The catch 22 I mentioned before is that unhealthy lifestyles are cheaper, expecially for a family living paycheck to paycheck and Gym memberships and healthy foods become a luxury. And where I wanted to expand my answer to fit this blog...I know that I personally stuggle with spending extra money on things for myself...my gym membership, fruits and veggies my family won't touch ect because it feels selfish and I know a lot of mom's struggle with that. I know the reality is, a healthier mom is best for the family, but it's hard to translate that when you are thinking Johnny needs new shoes and Amy needs braces.

I don't know that it's addictive, but I know I feel sooo much better when I avoid it regularly. I do "cheat" occasionally, but try to make it rare, something really good, and something with real food in it. (scratch baked goods instead of something like a twinkie..eww)
